10 things to do this month ...

  • amsterdam-june

1. Down the Garden Path: Open Garden Days | From 20 – 22 June 2014, 25 of Amsterdam’s private gardens open to the public as part of the annual Open Garden Days. This year’s theme is ‘Utility and Pleasure’, charting the development of the gardens as city orchards, vegetable and herb gardens in the 17th century to ornamental gardens as their owners became wealthier | €15 a ticket from Keizersgracht 177, Amnesty International.

2. Drinks & Nibbles: Boca | An incredibly popular spot with locals for a drink and lite bite in the early evening. Our favourite are the mixed sharing boards in small, medium and large – ideal for sharing with friends in this easy, relaxed environment.

3. Chocaholic: Urban Cacao | Where refined chocolates are produced, celebrated and sold. If you have a sweet tooth, you must visit their workshop only 10 minutes from Canal House at Rozengracht 202, 1016 NL.

4. If You Build It: The Art of the Brick | From 29 May 2014, more than 70 astounding Lego structures built from in excess of a million LEGO bricks will dominate the Amsterdam EXPO for their new exhibition ‘The Art of the Brick’ – named by CNN as one of the world’s 10 must-see exhibitions! At €16 per ticket visit

5. Café Come Restaurant: Van Puffelen | Café-restaurant Van Puffelen on the Prinsengracht began in 1989 as a café with a couple of tables. Nowadays, spread over two buildings where big groups can find plenty of space to drink and dine, it is a very lively place. On the menu are many Mediterranean dishes and the terrace, though small, gets afternoon and evening sun.

6. Talent Scouting: ITS Festival | Every year, at the end of June, the latest crop of performing artists will flood the city of Amsterdam. The International Theatre School Festival Amsterdam is the biggest European student festival where you can scout over 200 theatre talents in more than 50 unique productions. Alongside the productions, the festival programme is filled with inspiring debates, lectures and workshops. The 25th edition will take place from 20 – 27 June 2014.

7. Posh Dog: Fat Dog | Instant hotspot The Fat Dog Amsterdam is now open! By Ron Blaauw - from the Michelin star restaurant Ron Gastrobar - The Fat Dog Amsterdam is the place to be for a good sausage on a bun accompanied by a glass of bubbly, beer or gin and tonic. Inspired by London’s Bubbledogs, it’s a must-do. Ruysdaelkade 251, 1072AX.

8. Park Life: Vondelpark Open Air Theatre | From May to August 2014, the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre presents a four-month programme packed with dance, cabaret, jazz, children's theatre, stand-up comedy and all genres of music.

9. Modern Classic: Restaurant Rijsel | Rijsel is the result of a passion for French food and an attempt to catch the lightheartedness of Flanders. In a classic-meets-60’s interior with a modern industrial feel they serve no-nonsense food at a fair price.

10. Firm Favourite: Hosokawa | In the heart of Amsterdam, Chef Hiromichi Hosokawa has been welcoming guests for almost 20 years. Hosokawa, which translates to “narrow river”, will bring you to ancient Japan with its traditional Robata grill, Teppan grill and incredible sushi.
