Karlijn, tell us a bit about you and what you do for a living …
I’m Karlijn. I’m 30 years old and have been living in Amsterdam for almost 12 years now. Almost two years ago I started Holistik, an online magazine promoting a stylish yet sustainable lifestyle. For now, the website is in Dutch but we’re in the process of adding English. Our mantra is ‘A Guide to a Greater You’. I want everyone to be able to access health, love and light.
Best place to escape the bustle of the city and find quiet?
I like to walk in The Vondelpark or relax with a coffee at Canal House. Both places can be silent and tranquil - especially the garden at Canal House. It’s the ideal spot to read a book or newspaper, or in my case, answer emails and clean up my inbox!
Amsterdam is big in to café culture. Where’s your favourite place for a healthful snack or light meal?
Salad & the City offers delicious, healthy salads and is close to my work.
SLA sells organic salads full of colour and flavour and with more than 11 salad bars across Holland, they are one the biggest salad chains in the country.
Venkel. The girls behind the counter are both chefs, baristas and now, salad connoisseurs. When you enter, you’re greeted with the most amazing fragrance of farm-fresh produce.
Poké Perfect has the most delicious and nutritious poké bowls. Often referred to as sushi in a bowl – it’s good for the soul and great for a quick on-the-go meal.

Where would you go for …
Pilates: PLTS is a new pilates studio based on practices made popular in America.
Yoga: Delight Yoga / Conscious Club.
Personal Training: My boyfriend, Miko, is a personal trainer. I train with him regularly either in the gym, Akasha, or even outside on the street. If you were going to indulge, where would it be?
Dinner at Mayur - hands down the best Indian food I have ever tasted. As a daily treat, I order a double shot latte with oat milk from Koffie Academie located on the Overtoom.
Any other recommendations or insights for those with healthfulness in mind?
Step, by Klaver Health located on the Rozengracht for the most perfect smoothies and freshly squeezed juices. If you go, ask to meet the owner, Stefanie Klaver. This orthomoleculair therapist turned her dream into a reality by starting a mini health centre on the busiest street in Amsterdam. She sells supplements, incredible teas and pure beauty products. She can also provide you with personal advise.
If you had 24 hours in Amsterdam, what would make your must-do list?
First a nice breakfast at Coffee Room on the Kinkerstraat. Nothing fancy. Just a cosy cafe with one of the nicest acai bowls in the entire city. Try to grab a table at the front window so you can people watch. After this, head over to the Ten Kate market for a wander and then stop by The Conscious Club to see which lessons are still available to join. Try a yoga or meditation lesson and afterwards enjoy a healthy lunch. In the afternoon go for a walk along the canals or visit one of the city’s many parks. In the evening I would chill in my hotel room, however if you still have the energy, go to restaurant Meets in de Pijp and order their famous Srilankese curry. Since the day they opened, this has been their most popular dish. From there it’s a 15 minute walk to the Concertgebouw - a must do!
